Since the construction of the Puerto de La Luz and Las Palmas, in the late nineteenth century, the adjacent areas to the port became the engine of the commercial and trade activity of the city. The area of Santa Catalina, next to Las Canteras Beach, homes both small shops to specialised stores, restaurants, shopping centres, bars and discos.
Between Gran Canaria Street and Plaza Manuel Becerra the shops of the marine district of La Isleta are located. The electronics stores of this area, many run by citizens of Indian origin, offer very competitive prices.
The Port Market is a very attractive shopping precinct. Alongside with the wholesale market, there are also local stalls betting for a new model of at-the-time shopping, tasting and consuming.
