Canarian folklore at the Plaza de España

New Roots

The Raíces Nuevas group was born in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, as a result of the initiative of a group of friends strongly united by their passion for traditional Canarian folklore. It has about thirty members.

Tamaima

The folkloric sociocultural group Tamaima was founded in 2020, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, by a group of friends of folklore, already with accumulated experience in this area of local culture.

Chemida Folkloric Group

The Agrupación Folklórica Chemida was born in 1981 in the neighborhood of Costa Ayala, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Chemida means, translated from the dialect spoken by the aborigines in the Canary Islands, “Meeting of men and women”. The group has three traditional costumes to its credit: the costume of Néstor Martín-Fernández De la Torre, the Gala costume of the City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the costume of the peasants who worked in the sugar cane harvest in the 20th century.

The Plaza de España

The Plaza de España is one of the Inca nodes of the urban center in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Located in the middle of Avenida José Mesa y López, it is also the anteroom to the semi-pedestrian and commercial section of this great artery of the city, an outdoor shopping area par excellence in the surroundings of the Puerto-Canteras area.

In recent years, this square, where the great achievements of the sports teams of the capital of Gran Canaria are usually celebrated in a popular way, has become an open stage so that every Saturday the local and visiting public can enjoy the exhibitions of different folkloric groups of music and dance.

Folklore in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Tourism LPA of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria programs this experience of Canarian culture, with free access, on Saturdays, every two weeks, in the Plaza de España (from 11:00 am, with samples of workshops and traditional games), and every Sunday in the Pueblo Canario, from 11:00 am.
