Port Market

In addition to fresh produce and services, Mercado del Puerto offers two added attractions: its building—declared a Cultural Heritage Asset as an outstanding example of Modernist wrought-iron architecture—and its diverse gastronomic offering, which has turned this food market and its surroundings into a vibrant leisure area, very close to Las Canteras Beach and next to the La Isleta neighbourhood.

The building was designed by architect Laureano Arroyo in 1891, eight years after construction of the port began, and was erected in the early 20th century on a site that had already housed stalls for the buying and selling of food products. It was assembled by technicians from the French Eiffel company, the same firm that had completed the Eiffel Tower in Paris just two years earlier.

Alongside the innovative use of iron, the market introduced a novel layout, with shops opening outwards along the entire perimeter of the building. Some of these premises operate as traditional shops, while others—like part of the interior stalls—have been transformed into establishments where visitors can purchase and enjoy food from different parts of the world.
