Cobblestone streets, stately houses, the Cathedral, hermitages and churches, Plaza de Santa Ana, El Museo Canario, the Casa de Colón… Everything in the city’s founding district breathes history.
A walk through Vegueta leads visitors to the Dogs of Santa Ana, a sculptural ensemble at the foot of the Cathedral that has become one of the city’s icons; to the Casas Consistoriales, located in the same square; and to the Hermitage and Plaza of San Antonio Abad, where Castilian troops settled in 1478 and where Christopher Columbus prayed before setting sail for the New World. The route also includes Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, Plaza de San Agustín, Plaza de Santo Domingo, and more.
In Vegueta, beyond strolling through history, visitors can also enjoy gastronomy—at the Mercado de Vegueta and its wide range of restaurants—as well as art, music and the performing arts.
