Triana, declared a Historic Ensemble and Site of Cultural Interest in 1993, is one of the historic districts of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and one of its most traditional and important open-air shopping areas, alongside Mesa y López. It is also a lively leisure and dining district, with a wide variety of venues spread across its many pedestrian streets. Two of the city’s main cultural venues are located here: the Teatro Pérez Galdós and the Teatro Cuyás.
Close to the edge of the Guiniguada ravine—which separates Triana from Vegueta, now covered by the road linking the capital with the centre of the island—stand some of its most emblematic squares: Plaza Hurtado de Mendoza and Plaza de Cairasco, dominated by the Gabinete Literario. This historic building is a fine example of Modernist architecture, a style that can be found throughout the district, especially along Triana’s main street—its principal thoroughfare and shopping hub—as well as in the surrounding streets and in San Telmo Park.
