City of Galdós

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the city of Galdós. His presence can be felt in many corners: in his birthplace—now a museum—, in sculptures and monuments, in the Teatro Pérez Galdós, and especially in the Schamann neighbourhood, where 51 streets, three squares and a roundabout bear the names of characters and works by Benito Pérez Galdós.

The writer was born in the capital of Gran Canaria in 1843. And although it was in the gatherings, newspapers and public life of Madrid that he would establish himself as a universal literary figure, it was in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that he grew up, spent his childhood, and received his early and adolescent education. It was also in the local press that he first stood out as a journalist, columnist and caricaturist, always marked by a sharp sense of humour.
