Around Mesa y López Avenue, department stores and shops, the Mercado Central, and a wide range of leisure and dining venues bring life to one of the city’s most important commercial areas, alongside Triana. Establishments are spread across a large area that extends from the Naval Base, very close to Las Alcaravaneras Beach, to Plaza de América, in the Guanarteme neighbourhood.
The area features three pedestrian spaces: the Mesa y López ramblas, mainly commercial and host to numerous events; Plaza de España, with its always-busy terraces; and Ruiz de Alda Street, a lively zone dedicated to leisure and dining.
Just a few steps from the Mesa y López ramblas stands the Church of Santa María del Pino (known as the Church of El Pino), built in 1927 on what were once dunes and sandy terrain that occupied this part of the city until the mid-20th century. It was then that urban development began, giving rise to this second major commercial and social hub of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
