The program ‘Investiga en Las Canteras’, launched by the Department of Ciudad de Mar of the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has guaranteed its continuity. This has been confirmed by the councilor of Ciudad de Mar, Pedro Quevedo, and the vice-rector of Research and Transfer, Sebastián López, after the working meeting they have held to take stock of this program that, since 2020, has supported the development of about twenty academic research works on the beaches of Las Canteras and El Confital.
The work and collaboration of these years ‘is perfectly aligned with the sustainability strategy that we have implemented in the management of beaches and coastline to preserve the landscape and marine life and anticipate the consequences of climate change’ said Pedro Quevedo. The councilman thanked the efforts of the university community and stressed, in that sense, that ‘the council will continue to invest in science and knowledge to help us in the process of making efficient decisions in our main landscape, natural, social and economic space’.
Investiga en Las Canteras has the participation of researchers in physical geography, computer science and artificial intelligence, plant physiology, process engineering, analytical chemistry, applied mathematics, zoology, marine bacterial ecology and microplastics, among others.
In this regard, the Vice-Rector for Research indicated that ‘this is a transversal project whose results support the need to open the university to society. Many of the works carried out have already had a practical application and we are going to continue in this line that we consider successful’.
The agreement establishes that the research groups will work in a coordinated and interrelated manner in order to cross-check data on different variables that directly affect this coastal area of the capital of Gran Canaria.
