The 45th Rally Islas Canarias will close the FIA ERC 2021 in November
As it happened in its first editions at the end of the 70s or, much more recently, last year, the Rally Islas Canarias will be held again in November, specifically, from the 18th to the 20th of that penultimate month of the year. In this way, the Gran Canaria event will close the FIA® ERC® 2021 as the eighth event on a calendar that continues to maintain legendary events on its roadmap.
The Rally Islas Canarias will seal the championship in absolute terms and also in other divisions. This is the case of the sections ERC Junior, ERC3 Junior and the Abarth Rally Cup, a single-brand event that will be in Gran Canaria for the third consecutive year.
"Every effort was made to keep the original calendar and avoid the inconvenience of changing the dates", assures Jean-Baptiste Ley. He recalls "the need to help safeguard the health and safety of all", in addition to closely following the evolution of the pandemic and "take into account the problems that the organizers are encountering when trying to plan their tests." As for the Rally Islas Canarias, he recalls that, “despite the limitations caused by COVID-19”, last season's was “a fantastic ending”. "We are confident that they will offer an even better event in 2021," adds the FIA ERC coordinator.
"Traveling to the Canary Islands poses logistical challenges and we have to make decisions in time so as not to harm the teams," admits Germán Morales. “The forecasts for the end of the season appear to be better and with the decision to move the celebration date to November, our intention is to save the 45th edition. At an organizational level, the route and other aspects were already defined, that is, we were prepared for the test to be held in May, but the current situation forces us to make decisions”, underlines the president of the Organizing Committee of the Rally Islas Canarias.
This international event will continue to be part of the FIA® ERC® for the sixth consecutive year. The ERC® (European Rally Championship) is the second most important event in the world after the WRC® (World Rally Championship), an aspect that is demonstrated by the high audience ratings for the championship in general and the Rally Islas Canarias in particular.
