MiniTransat 01

Saturday, November 2, at 14:00 GMT. That will be the time of the official departure of the second stage (2,700 miles between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Le Marin, Martinique) of the Mini-Transat solo regatta, whose fleet of 83 sailboats and skippers are prepared in the capital of Gran Canaria for last part of the crossing. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria awaits an exciting nautical show and we encourage residents and visitors to give farewell to sailors at the Vela Latina Canaria dock at the City Marina.

Founded in 1977 by Englishman Bob Salmon, the Mini-Transat will celebrate  its 40th anniversary starting from La Rochelle, France, on October 1st.
After an absence on the last two editions, La Rochelle will host these 6.50m boats for the 7th time in the center town former fishing harbor from September 20th to October 1st 2017.
The Mini-Transat is the flagship race of the annual Mini circuit, with 84 men and women sailors from about 15 different nationalities : a sporting feat for some, a personal challenge for others, a human adventure for all of them.

This 4050 nautical miles solo crossing, on the smallest offshore racing boats, only 6.50 m long, is sailed in two legs.
The first one, from La Rochelle to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is 1350 miles long and will last for 7 to 10 days. This leg will be, for rooky sailors, their first big offshore race. After an often complicated exit of the Bay of Biscay, sailors will expect some long slips down the Portuguese coast before arriving in theCanary archipelago.
The 2700 miles long second leg will start from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in early November. It will take from 15 to 20 sailing days to reach Le Marin in Martinique, French West Indies. Due to the important relief of the numerous islands, restart from the Canary can be tricky before reaching the famous trade winds. This easterly wind should lead the fleet to Le Marin on a long downwind run.

This race is also an opportunity for the three hosting cities, La Rochelle¸ Las Palmas Gran Canaria and Le Marin to develop academic, economic, touristic and sports exchanges.
