The romerías are traditional religious pilgrimages where citizens walk beside small carriages filled with gifts for a local Saint, all among a cheerful festive environment. These typical festivities represent the most followed social events during summer all over the Canary Islands. One of the most remarkable ones in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the Romería del Rosario in the old town of Vegueta. Every first weekend of October, hundreds of romeros (pilgrims) walk the stone pavement of the streets of this historic borough, an ideal event to get to know the local identity and also to enjoy local food.
