Las Palmas de Gran Canaria acoge, del 8 al 10 de marzo de 2013, la Feria Internacional del Mar, FIMAR 2013, en la Plaza de Canarias, junto al Muelle Santa Catalina, con la presencia de 66 stands expositores, un 10% más que en la pasada edición, lo que la convierten en el evento de referencia de los profesionales del sector y un escaparate para los proyectos de innovación y tecnología marino - marítima que se están desarrollando en el Archipiélago canario.
La Feria, organizada por el Ayuntamiento capitalino en colaboración con la Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas, la Armada española y la patronal DE LA Federación de la Pequeña y Media Empresa del Metal (FEMEPA), contará con firmas de motonáutica, talleres de reparaciones navales, empresas de turismo activo, deportes y escuelas náuticas, centros de investigación y empresas de seguridad en el mar. Además, se organizarán exhibiciones en el mar, talleres infantiles y jornadas profesionales técnicas de presentación de proyectos de tecnología e innovación.
Homenaje al Juan Sebastián Elcano
La gran novedad en esta edición de FIMAR 2013 es la presencia en la ciudad del Buque Escuela de la Armada, Juan Sebastián Elcano, que llegará a la capital el jueves 7 de marzo y permanecerá atracado en el muelle de poniente en Santa Catalina, como un escaparate excepcional del evento. Los ciudadanos podrán visitar este histórico navío hasta el sábado 9, cuando será despedido con una gran parada naval que comenzará en el Muelle Santa Catalina a las 17.00 horas. El barco desplegará las velas de sus cuatro palos: Blanca, Almansa, Asturias y Nautilus, y navegará en línea a la Avenida Marítima hasta el barrio marinero de San Cristóbal para despedirse de la ciudad.
Proyectos de innovación
FIMAR 2013 contará además con un área temática específica destinada a la investigación y a la innovación. El Ayuntamiento presentará durante la feria algunos de los proyectos que la Concejalía de Ciudad de Mar ha puesto en marcha para dinamizar la economía azul en la capital grancanaria, entre ellos, el arrecife artificial de La Laja, la liberación de los mapas de buceo de la Ciudad o la Microárea Marina Protegida de Las Canteras.
Otros proyectos que se harán visibles son los que mostrará la Plataforma Oceánica de Canarias, PLOCAN, relacionados con las oportunidades de producción de energía renovable en el mar que ofrece el municipio a partir de casos reales. Además, el Cluster Marítimo de Canarias presentará la marca única de calidad con la que se pretende unir al todas las empresas del sector náutico recreativo y de ocio.

La celebración de la feria del Mar permitirá a los ciudadanos visitar las embarcaciones y conocer toda la oferta de ocio que se puede encontrar en la ciudad, con ventajas a la hora de adquirir productos o servicios. En este sentido, el Ayuntamiento y las empresas expositoras ofrecerán descuentos y condiciones especiales durante los días de celebración de la feria.
El espejo de agua del muelle Santa Catalina será el gran parque azul que volverá a acoger, como en la pasada edición, un ejemplo de las oportunidades que ofrece el litoral. Exhibiciones de piragüismo, paddle surf, motos de agua, salvamento marítimo, radio control, buceo y vela ligera convertirán esta zona privilegiada de encuentro de la ciudad con el Puerto, en una fiesta que también tendrá como espectadores a los miles de cruceristas que llegarán ese fin de semana a bordo de los cruceros Oceana, Thomson Majesty y La Belle de L’Adriatique.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria hosts, from 8th til 10th March 2013, the International Sea Fair, FIMAR 2013, at the Plaza de Canarias, next to Santa Catalina Dock, with the presence of 66 exhibition booths, a 10% more tan last year’s edition, making it a reference event for professionals of the sector and a showroom for innovation and marine technology projects already in development in the Canaries.
The Fair, organised by the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in collaboration with the Port Authority of Las Palmas, the Spanish Royal Navy and the employers of the Federation of Small and Medium Enterprise Metal (FEMEPA), will feature enterprises of powerboats, naval repairing workshops, active tourism enterprises, sport shops and nautical schools, research centres and safety-at-sea companies. Besides, there will be exhibitions at sea, children workshops and professional technical sessions for presenting technology and innovation projects.
Tribute to Juan Sebastián Elcano
The great novelty of this edition of FIMAR 2013 is the presence in the City of the Spanish Royal Navy Training Ship, Juan Sebastián Elcano, which will arrive to the Capital City on Thursday the 7th and will stay at the west pier of Santa Catalina Dock, as an exceptional background for the event. Citizens will be able to visit this historic vessel until Saturday the 9th when she will be given farewell among a great naval parade starting at Santa Catalina dock at 17:00h. The ship will set sail of her four masts: Blanca, Almansa, Asturias and Nautilus, and will sail following the coastline next to the Seafront Avenue until reaching the fishing Borough of San Cristóbal to say the city goodbye.
Innovation projects
Fimar 2013 will also feature a specific thematic area for innovation and research. The City Council will present some projects carried by the Council of City of Sea at the fair to give dynamism to the blue economy, like the artificial reef of La Laja, the free exposure of the diving maps of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or the Protected Marine Micro-area of Las Canteras.
Other projects to be shown will be presented by the Oceanic Platform of the Canaries (PLOCAN), which are related with the opportunities given by the municipality of producing renewable energy at the sea based on real cases. Besides, the Maritime Cluster of the Canaries will present the unique quality brand with they will aim to join all the nautical, leisure and recreational enterprises

The celebration of the Sea Fair will allow citizens to visit the ships and to get to know every leisure offer to be found in the city, with advantages to purchase products and services. In this regard, the City Council and the exhibitor enterprises will offer discounts and special conditions during the celebrating days of the fair.
The water mirror of Santa Catalina Dock will be the great blue garden that will host, like it did last year, an exhibition of kayaking, paddle surf, personal watercrafts, sea rescue, RC-model ships, diving and soft sailing, and that will turn this privileged meeting point of the city and the port in a great party that will also have as spectators the thousands of cruise ship passengers who will arrive at the city aboard the Oceana, Thomson Majesty and La Belle de l’Adriatique cruise ships.
