Las Palmas de Gran Canaria cerró el año 2013 con un balance muy positivo en el número de turistas que visitaron la ciudad, tanto excursionistas del sur de Gran Canaria como viajeros que se alojaron en la capital. Según la Encuesta sobre entrada de viajeros y gasto turístico elaborado por el Instituto de Estadística de Canarias (ISTAC) la ciudad recibió entre enero y diciembre del pasado año un total de 893.641 visitantes.
La capital recibió el 25,1 por ciento de los turistas alojados durante 2013 en los núcleos turísticos de los municipios de San Bartolomé de Tirajana y Mogán, un total de 653.436 personas que aprovecharon parte de sus vacaciones para visitar LPGC. El número de turistas que pernoctaron en hoteles de la ciudad fueron, 239.526 personas.
El primer trimestre del año fue el que registró el mejor comportamiento en la llegada de turistas alojados a la capital, con 280.100 personas, de ellas, 198.890 excursionistas procedentes del sur de la isla. En los meses de abril, mayo y junio, el número de turistas en la capital fue de 158.499, de ellos, 121.844 fueron excursionistas; en los meses de verano, el tercer trimestre del año, los datos del ISTAC indican que la ciudad recibió a 204.332 visitantes, de los que 158.293 se alojaban en el sur de Gran Canaria y 46.039 pernoctaron en la capital. Por último, durante el cuarto trimestre, desde octubre a diciembre de 2013, la ciudad acogió a 250.711 turistas, de los que 175.089 eran excursionistas procedentes de otros municipios de Gran Canaria.
Por nacionalidades los turistas que más visitan la capital son los alemanes, españoles, y británicos aunque se ha producido una subida considerable en los meses de temporada alta de franceses y nórdicos.
El concejal de Turismo, Pablo Barbero, destacó que LPGC se está posicionando como un destino urbano de calidad y explicó que los datos de ocupación hotelera y excursionistas, en 2013, avalan que la capital grancanaria está recuperando su carácter turístico. En este sentido, valoró como muy positivos estos datos y apuntó que “gracias a las campañas de promoción permanente que llevamos a cabo durante todo el año en San Bartolomé de Tirajana y Mogán los turistas se animan a contratar excursiones o acercarse por su cuenta en guaguas y coches de alquiler y pasar un día en la ciudad”.
El concejal aseguró que los datos “invitan al optimismo a la industria turística de la capital” y destacó la aparición de una oferta diferenciada a partir de la renovación de pequeños hoteles y antiguas pensiones que se han transformado para adaptarse a las demandas de los turistas del S.XXI. “El sector es consciente del buen momento turístico que vive LPGC y el potencial que tenemos para captar visitantes, entre ellos los cruceristas que tienen su puerto base en el Muelle Santa Catalina y que son potenciales clientes”.

In the last trimester of the year, from October to December 2013, the Capital City welcomed 250.711 tourists, out of whom 175.089 came on excursions from the south and other municipalities of Gran Canaria.
Regarding nationalities, tourists who visit the Capital City the most are Germans, Spaniards and British although a large increase of French and nordics has been observed during the high season months.
City Councillor of Tourism, Pablo Barbero, highlighted that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is gaining its positions as a quality urban destination, and explained that the hotel occupancy and excursions data of 2013 reveal that the Grancanarian Capital City is recovering its status of tourist character. In this regard, he valued these data very positively and stated that “thanks to the permanent promotional campaigns carried out along the year in San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Mogán, tourists feel attracted to buy excursions or to come by themselves on buses or cars to spend a day in the Capital City”.
The Councillor assured that the data “lead to optimism for the city’s tourist industry” and highlighted the importance of the segmented offer after the refurbishing of small hotels and old guest houses that have transformed to meet the demands of the tourist of the 21st Century “the sector is well aware of the good times Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is living in terms of tourism and the potential we have to attract more visitors, among them, the cruise ship passengers who are potential customers since they have Santa Catalina as base port.”
