Las Palmas de Gran Canaria será un año más el punto de partida de la Regata ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), el evento transoceánico de ocio náutico más grande del mundo, que en 2013 alcanzará su 28ª edición. El 24 de noviembre será el día en que los veleros leven amarras desde la bahía de la capital grancanaria rumbo a la isla caribeña de Santa Lucía, una travesía de 2.700 millas náuticas que se ha convertido ya en una prueba de referencia dentro del circuito mundial
El concejal de Turismo, Pablo Barbero, señaló que este evento refuerza la fortaleza de la capital de Gran Canaria como el gran destino urbano y náutico del Atlántico, "una estrategia definida en el Plan de Internacionalización que está poniendo en marcha la Ciudad”. "Pocas ciudades del mundo tienen el privilegio de recibir durante varias semanas al año a 245 embarcaciones y más de 1.200 tripulantes antes de iniciar esta gran aventura de cruzar el océano, y eso tenemos que ponerlo en valor no sólo las instituciones, sino también los ciudadanos", añadió
La edición 2012 de la Regata ARC, en la que participaron 227 barcos y casi 1.300 tripulantes, generó un gasto en lsla de más de 2,2 millones de euros, con una media de 9.770 euros por embarcación. La mayor parte de estos ingresos se corresponde con gastos de equipamiento náutico, servicio técnico, combustible y costes de atraque, a lo que hay que sumar otras importantes cantidades en concepto de alojamiento, manutención y compra de provisiones para la travesía. La organización de la regata ha cerrado ya la lista de participantes, con 245 barcos inscritos, en la que hay una lista de espera de unas 40 embarcaciones.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be once again the start line of the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), the world’s largest transoceanic crossing sailing event, which will celebrate its 28th edition on the 13th November 2013. That will be the day when the boats will cast off in full sail from the Bay of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria heading towards the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, a 2700-mile crossing that has already become a reference event in the world sailing circuit.
The Councillor of Tourism, Mr. Pablo Barbero, stated that this event endorses the strength of the capital city of Gran Canaria as the great urban and nautical tourist destination of the Atlantic, a “strategy defined as the Internationalisation Plan this City is carrying out”. He also added “Only a few cities in the world have the privilege of receiving for many weeks a year a number of 245 boats, and more than 1200 crew members before setting off for this great adventure that is crossing the Atlantic Ocean, and that is something we must value no only from the institutions, but also from the citizens.
